One of the motions passed was this one:
The association resolved that it "opposes any covert or overt U.S. military action against Iran, condemns any public-relations campaigns designed to convince the U.S. public to support military action against Iran, and urges President George W. Bush and members of the U.S. Congress to refrain from using any covert or overt military action, including air strikes, against the country or government of Iran."
Which prompted this comment below the article:
Thank Goodness the anthropologists are taking a stand against an invasion, either clandestine or open, of Iran. It's about time. This should be more widely publicized.
So what do you think - is the comment sarcastic or serious? Because that's EXACTLY the comment I would have posted, and I think we all know exactly how I would have meant it.

Straight up. Not quite hyperbolic enough to be sarcasm.
Agreed: straight up. You would have said it sarcastically but didn't bother to; the thought of doing so was enough. Anyone who actually says it is likely to be painfully in earnest.
Well, that commenter's name is Elizabeth Sklar Hoyt. Google comes up empty for that name.
I must say, that's a rockin' name, and would rock even more if you left off the Hoyt. Hell, if that were my name, I'd leave off the Elizabeth too, and be known only as Sklar. That's a name you can roar.
I AM SKLAAAR! Boy, that'd liven up a dull scientific meeting.

Googling him I find that he has a Ph.D. from Duke and that he teaches English at what appears to be another state's version of the NCSSM. One might infer he was an English major. One wonders if there is anything else he could do to so completely conform to stereotype.
Now that the anthropologists have taken a stand, surely the archaeologists will have to speak up also!
