Administrative Update

Thanks to those of you who told me the comments were hosed--I was beginning to feel very lonely and sad.

Looks like a spam attack broke my MT Blacklist, so I just deleted the darn thing, which is a nice stopgap--for the five minutes it'll take for the spammers to reappear.

I'm thinking that WordPress may be the way to go. I'm pretty sure my hosting company has the minimum requirements--the only problem will be finding time for the upgrade. I'm not about to try and load this stuff on dialup, so I'll have to use my lunch hour.

Bear with me, and if you have any suggestions, put 'em in the comments, or if those die again, just email me.

Testing--again.

The beta of MT 3.2 is out, and it has some new spam-control features I'm excited about. http://www.sixapart.com/movabletype/beta/. Also, the admin interface has been slicked-up some.

I did wonder how you could do a Harry Potter post and end up with zero comments....

I could send you my MT-Blacklist list. It's about 20-30 entries and seems to get most of the spam. One thing I've found very effective that doesn't impact the commentors much is strings of the form

word-|-word

which means "dash word or word dash". Almost all the spam I get has a keyword like this in a URL somewhere in the spam, even if it's not the main URL. Normal people rarely attach a dash to such words, so it's not overly intrusive.

P.S. Instead of "word", you should use the common spam terms, such as a certain 5 letter word for a card game.

My husband and i both shifted from MT to WordPress because the spam was so incredibly uncontrollable. The switch is not that hard, honestly; if you need pointers on making the switch, I'd be happy to provide some. It's well worth it. Spam Karma kills 99% of spam. I hardly ever have to deal with it now.
