Clowns, Damn Clowns, and Clowns From Hell

I know that I am not alone in fear and loathing of clowns. I found them terrifying as a circus-attending child, and had an aversion to them I didn't quite understand until the twin pop-culture forces of Poltergeist and IT solidified my adolescent prejudices: clowns are evil.

Yep, eeeevillle. Look, first of all, they're basically mimes in technicolor, which should be enough to put anyone off their lunch. Then there's the whole nose/wig/grotesquely oversized eyes and wide, wide, predatory mouth problem. NO ONE smiles that wide, ever, unless they are preparing to DEVOUR YOUR SOUL, MUHAHAHAHA!! Then there are all the negative cultural references: John Wayne Gacy, those hideously freaky sad clown paintings from the 60's and 70's, the Insane Clown Posse, Killer Clowns from Outer Space, The Day The Clown Cried...you get the picture. Clowns are embedded in our collective consciousness as very bad things.

So WHY did Disney, in its infinite wisdom, design a brand new show for toddlers about CLOWNS? Jo-Jo's Circus has been an instant hit with The Boy, and while the clowns are as friendly and innocuous as only Disneyfied clowns could be, they are still clowns.

It's lulling The Boy into a false sense of security about the scourge that is clowndom, and I dread the day that his little eyes are opened to the reality of clowns. It'll probably happen at the circus, too, because that's where most kids first confront the garish, big-mouthed freaks--in the cavernous empty darkness of the Big Top. Thanks, Disney. I'll be sending you The Boy's therapy bills.

Oh and PS - Target, WHAT is up with the giant eyeless clown mask decor dangling from your ceilings? Are you trying to kill me?

Wait'll you have to hire a clown for your boy's third birthday party. Pray to a higher power that the infatuation is short-lived and he can move on to Bob the Builder.

I know it's hip to hate clowns, but...I kind of like 'em, at least the good ones like Bill Irwin, or the Cirque du Soleil's Dralion show.

Anna -

MY EYES! THEY BURN!

Joshua -

Oh yeah, I don't even think of Cirque de Soleil's clowns as clowns--they are watchable. Must be the makeup...

Took a trip to Target at lunch today, and had to laugh when I saw the empty-eyed clowns. I love it when real life interacts with my blog-induced psychosis.

I think that people fearing clowns is a bunch of bull. It's the "cool thing" and that is why everyone says they have a fear of clowns. Unless you had some EXTREMELY weird tramatic experience, I think everyone who fears clowns needs to grow up and get a life. THEY'RE JUST CLOWNS!!

I can't believe what type of person you are to go and blame Disney for tainting your child about clowns. Did you know that you can change the channel if you fear that a show about happy small small clowns will taint your child? You are in controlRemember Poltergeist and IT were movies? What is wrong with you? It is scary to know that people like you can get a drivers license let alone have a kid. There is so much stupidty is being spewed along this string and I am just as guilty for posting.

the only reason i dont like clowns is because i watched IT when i was four....three times.

MY SON ABSOLUTELY LOVES JO JO'S CIRCUS AND YOU ARE ONE MESSED UP INDIVIDUAL IF YOU THINK YOUR CHILD IS IN ANY KIND OF DANGER BECAUSE OF A TELEVISION SHOW FOR CHILDREN. ESPECIALLY ONE THAT BROADENS THEIR IMAGINATIONS AND HELP EACH CHILD DEVELOP MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY. WHY SHOULD YOUR CHILD BE AFRAID OF THE THINGS YOU'RE AFRAID OF!? YOU SHOULD ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO LEARN, GROW, AND BE MORE THAN YOU EVER IMAGINED. BUT I GUESS YOU NEVER HAD THE CHANCE TO LEARN SINCE YOU WERE OVER IN THE CORNER SCARED TO DEATH INSTEAD OF TRYING SOMETHING NEW OR DIFFERENT. THE ONLY PERSON THAT'S HURTING ANYTHING IN ANY WAY IS NOT A CLOWN, BUT YOU FOR WANTING TO HALT ANY KIND OF EDUCATION YOUR CHILD MAY GET FROM SIMPLY TURNING ON YOUR TV SO THEY CAN COUNT, LEARN COLORS, AND OTHER WONDERFUL THINGS AS THEIR EYES WIDEN AND ARE AMAZED WITH WHAT WONDERFUL THINGS THEY SEE AND IMAGINE. HERE'S A THOUGHT IF YOU ARE SO SCARED OF CLOWNS, TRY TURNING THE TV OFF AND "YOU" GO SIT DOWN AND SIMPLIFY THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE PLAYHOUSE DISNEY PROVIDES FOR YOU, AND PREPARE YOUR KID FOR KINDERGARTEN AND HIS/HER FUTURE YOURSELF!!!

I am shocked. I typed in Jo's Jos's Circus to find a web-site and this crap pops up. Are you crazy? My two year old loves Jo Jo. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the show or Disney for that matter. It's people like you that make this world such a crazy place. If you don't like it, guess what, this is America and you have the right to change the channel just like I have the right to watch it with my child. Humans are not born with fear, we as parents put it in them so your child will thank you in the future for his phobia of clowns. What a sick individual you are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First off "mother" stop freaking out about posts on this site. If you read the first post with any kind of sense you'll see that while she is expressing her fear of clowns it is also done tongue-in-cheek. She's not saying that Jo-Jo should die or anything. Cool your jets lady. Its people like you, that can't take humor, sarcasm, etc. that have turned America into the place that it is today...filled with soccer moms who have nothing else better to do that police whatever anyone else is doing. And furthermore, you had the right not to click on the link that led you to this website. So for goodness' sake, settle down, pop a valium and quit taking silly things so seriously.

By the way, I am horrified by clowns, my mother collected clown figurines when I was little and had pictures of them on the wall, and I had horrible nightmares about them...I've had a fear of them ever since. Its not paralyzing, but I just stay clear of the creepy, nasty things.

why make comments about each other. there is a general point. My son loves the show and i think that's great. the show teaches lots of great things. but if i felt he shouldn't watch it, like other shows that are on 'Nick' and some of the afternoon shows on disney, I just turn the TV off and create a hands on way of learning. Like color on cardboard then make our own puzzle from it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, just use your thought process to do what you feel is better for your kid.
